Our Board Skills Matrix Framework

A typical Board Skills Matrix appears as follows. It may seem simple, but unless the process used to derive it is thoughtful and thorough, the matrix will be superficial and add little value. Note that a director’s perception of their own skills and behaviours is often different to the way others perceive their skills and behaviours are exhibited in the boardroom.

Board Skills Matrix Framework

Our Board Skills Matrix Surveys don’t just ask directors for their self-rating. The surveys also elicit additional information that helps validate and/or triangulate overall director ratings and any resulting gaps. That additional information includes ratings of the importance of each skill and the extent to which survey respondents consider that each skill is under or sufficiently represented on the board.

A peer rating also helps add rigour to director ratings as it focuses on the how others perceive each director’s skills and behaviours are exhibited in the boardroom. It can also help directors adapt their actions and behaviours to ensure their skills are brought to the boardroom and their behaviours are adapted where necessary.

The Board Skills Matrix Report also identifies any lack of alignment in terms of views as to importance of each skill and the extent that skills are well represented. This can help drive important discussions and achieve alignment around what skills and behaviours are needed to build the board of the future.
